Changing my eyeliner habits

Up until recently, I'd say early this year, I had always worn my eyeliner the same way. It had become part of my daily make up routine and was my safety zone, I didn't like how my eyes looked without it and felt I didn't look 'right'. However, the more I have experimented and learnt about make up the more I have realised my eyeliner habits were not flattering on my eyes.

Since I first got into make up at school I have always without fail, lined my waterline with a black eyeliner. No matter what the rest of my eye look was I would always include this step. It's one of those things that because I had always done it, I just continued to do it without thinking about it. I felt my eyes didn't look finished without that trusty swipe of black eyeliner.

So, why did I start to change this habit? Well for one its partly because of the beauty blogging community. When you see posts and read about how other people apply make up, you become interested and it encourages you to step out of your comfort zone. You think 'that make up looks great on them' or 'that product sounds amazing'. It's when you see how other people do things that you suddenly think 'yep, thats a much better way'.

I always lined my eyes in this way because I thought it made them look prettier I guess, I thought the black made them look far more striking. On reflection though I think all it actually did was make them look smaller, I have hooded eyes as it is so I should be doing whatever I can to open my eyes out!

The Rimmel Scandaleyes Waterproof Kohl Kajal in Black has been my eyeliner of choice for this job for years and years. This eyeliner hasn't become completely redundant though, I still use it fairly regularly on my top lash line blended out a little to soften up the line. Don't get me wrong, if I'm going on a night out I slap on as much eyeliner as I can along with my smokey eyes. But for day to day it just looks far too harsh.

These days I have been reaching for the Nyx Wonder Pencil in Light on a more and more regular basis. So, what makes this pencil so wonderous? Well, it can be used to cover imperfections all over the face so its super handy. But for me it works best on the waterline. Its a 'nude' shade and putting this on my waterline makes my eyes look fresh and awake even when that really isn't the case.

I do still like a bit of colour on the underneath of my eyes so i opt for a bit of eyeshadow on a teeny tiny brush smudged under the lashes. I just find this look on a whole is a lot softer and far more flattering on my eyes, it makes them look much big and more open than my old method for sure.

Coloured eyeliners are also a great option for under the bottom lash line and something I have experimented with a little. I am in love with the Nyx Slide On Glide On Eyeliners which I have mentioned a few times now. In particular I love the shade Jewel, its a pretty purple shade with a gold shimmer running through it that I feel compliments my brown eyes beautifully.

I go through real phases with winged liner, again with hooded eyes it can be a little tricky to get right but on days when I do fancy a wing I always reach for the Stila Stay All Day Waterproof Liquid Eye Liner in Intense Black. This stuff stays put for hours and the pen style applicator makes it fuss free to apply.

Have you had any long time beauty habits that you've changed?

  2. This is such an interesting post. I am the same as you - I refused to give birth until I whacked on some black liner haha! And yes, waterline liner is still my jam because I haven't yet found the right nude shade to work on my skintone without making me look crazy. I use a brown liner on my bottom lash line and yes, winged liner is a must for me haha! xxx
